Mark your calendars and tell all your friends: the first full-length trailer for Spencer just dropped, and it looks phe-nomenal.

The highly-anticipated Princess Diana biopic, which stars Kristen Stewart as the late princess, was one of the buzziest new-releases to show at the Venice Film Festival – and if its suspenseful new trailer is anything to go by, it’s going to be worth every single bit of the hype.

Following a first-look poster of Kristen Stewart unconsolable in a wedding gown, and a teaser trailer that didn’t give much (read: anything at all) away, the new trailer shows Stewart transformed into the late princess as she navigates a Royal Family Christmas at Sandringham towards the end of her marriage to Prince Charles.

Set over a fraught three day period, the trailer is soundtracked by a haunting rendition of Lou Reed’s Perfect Day, and depicts Stewart’s Diana as she navigates festive preparations at Her Majesty’s Norfolk estate.

Spencer is directed by Pablo Larraín, the Chilean director who famously cast Natalie Portman as a grieving Jackie Kennedy in the Oscar-nominated Jackie, a drama about the life of the former first lady following the assassination of her husband, JFK. Though originally pipped for a 2022 release, Spencer will now arrive on UK cinema screens in November, making it a strong contender for awards season.

In fact, with a prestigious cast completed by Sally Hawkins, Timothy Spall and Poldark’s Jack Farthing, who will take on the role of Prince Charles, many already believe the film is a shoo-in for Academy Awards success in 2022.

“Best Actress Nomination is in the bag,” shared one Twitter user following the teaser trailer’s release, while another quipped, “Kristen Stewart next year” alongside a picture of someone weighed down by an oversized Academy Award.

While Stewart’s physical transformation into the late princess is uncanny thanks to the help of costume designer Jacqueline Durran, it’s the American actress’ perfection of Diana’s accent that has us most excited.

“Three days, that’s it,” Stewart’s Diana is heard reassuring herself in the bathroom mirror, before the trailer moves through the tense days that are to follow.

“There’s no hope for me – not with them,” she’s later heard saying.

Stewart has previously spoken of her connection with the late princess, telling Jimmy Kimmel Live! last year, “It’s hard not to feel protective over her. She was so young … everyone’s perspective is different, and there’s no way to get everything right … what is fact in relation to personal experience.”

The film comes 24 years after the Princess’s fatal car crash in Paris in 1997, and will be released on 5 November 2021 in the UK.

We can’t wait!
